Soundscape VR Debuts New Stage at Colorado’s Sonic Bloom Festival

          June 25, 2019

Soundscape VR, the world’s first virtual reality music stage, made its official debut at last week’s Sonic Bloom music festival at Hummingbird Ranch, CO. Groove Science Studios, creators of the Soundscape VR platform, offered festival attendees the opportunity to explore and interact with the company’s audio-reactive virtual reality worlds while onsite at the music festival. First presented at Burning Man, and then Suwannee Hulaween, Sonic Bloom marked the version 3 unveiling of the latest changes to the expanded stage

Soundscape VR is home to the most advanced visual arts and music experiences available in virtual reality. Users can fly, explore, play, create, and immersive themselves in massive surreal audio-reactive worlds with breathtaking visuals; alone, with friends, or other fans – Soundscape VR is a social, musical, metaverse without limits.

“We’ve grown the stage to allow for more participants at the same time, increased visibility to 360º so all spectators can experience what’s happening ‘in world,’ and enhanced our state-of-the-art VR hardware to the most powerful in the world – when you couple all of that with the live music pumping through the new P.A. system, it’s a shared immersive audiovisual experience unlike anything ever seen before,” remarked Eric Alexander, Founder and CEO of Groove Science Studios.

“Our intention has also been to bridge the gap between what’s capable live, on-stage, and what we can experience ‘in-world’ through virtual reality. said Alexander, “It’s incredibly satisfying to work with other artists who ‘get’ what’s happening with music and virtual reality, and it only emboldens Soundscape to push the boundaries of what we can do. After all, if it wasn’t for music, this wouldn’t exist at all!”

Soundscape VR is catching the eye of the industry. Earlier this year, the company announced the addition of three pre-loaded sets to the platform, including Big Gigantic’s Nocturnal album, STS9’s 2018 Hulaween set, and EOTO’s performance from Denver, CO in 2018.

“We’re working with artists who really love utilizing new technology and concepts to engage and interact with their fans. Soundscape offers a 24/7, enhanced festival environment where bands and fans can intermingle, experience music in new ways, and connect, regardless of location or time. It’s the next generation in social music,” commented Matt Hogan, Director of Artist Outreach, “And because we have the capability to build out custom environments, the artists we work with can curate their own ‘always-on’ venues and worlds.”

Soundscape VR can be found on Oculus Home and Steam, and downloaded for free for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and the Valve Index. The platform has already seen a number of additions this year, including 244-player social interactivity, character upgrades and customization, and the addition of a third, brand-new 20 sq km fantasy world “Twilight Thicket.”

At Suwanee Hulaween, Soundscape VR Premiered the World’s First Virtual Reality Music Stage

          November 28, 2018

Soundscape VR premiered the world’s first virtual reality music stage stage at the Suwannee Hulaween Music Festival on October 26-28th, 2018.

Following a successful installation at Burning Man, Soundscape VR, created by Groove Science Studios, Inc., brought their state-of-the-art VR music experience to Florida and dazzled festival goers as they stepped into a surreal interactive and explorable virtual universe of music and light.  Live music was played into the audio-reactive VR worlds and over the stage PA system simultaneously, while players created the visual experience for spectators via 120” projection screens.

Across three days of the festival, thousands of Hulaween attendees had the opportunity to experience the first-of-its-kind virtual reality activation. Consistent lines of people waiting for the chance to enter the Soundscape VR world were a regular sight; dancing, laughing, and enjoying the community of other festival-goers as they cheered on their friends manifestations projected across the big screen. Each player seemed to take a different path in exploring the world, with many finally taking off the headset only to immediately return to the back of the line for another round.

As the rhythm of the bass sent waves of light rushing through the virtual world, players took flight to explore their new realties; blasting fireworks, painting, and doodling names in the sky.  One world would exist deep inside a shifting nebula of infinite scale, the next on a icy peak bathed in the glow of the aurora borealis. As one player created a cyclone of embers inside a crystalline cave, the next would spray a firehose of light, bombarding a distant planet.

Watch the Soundscape VR Hulaween aftermovie to see the installation in action here. Photos of the experience are available here.

“We were very excited to have the opportunity to host Soundscape VR at this year’s
Suwannee Hulaween Festival,” said Andrew Carroll, Producer of the festival’s ‘Spirit Lake’. “What a unique and exciting experience entering into the Soundscape VR world! Every time I stopped by the installation there were lines of people waiting to venture into this out-of-this-world experience. Most people have never seen anything like it! I hope we’re able to have them back next year.”

Soundscape VR started in 2013 as a vision of a new way to bring people closer to their favorite music, empowering artists and users alike. The company would later unveil the world’s first VR music venue at Burning Man, becoming one of the most immersive art experiences at the illustrious event. The software continued to advance as the company grew, now launching it’s festival tour where fans engage in a audiovisual sonic-adventure synchronized between two realities; a fantasy world of light and sound beyond their wildest dreams.

“There is no other project that could ever be as challenging and satisfying to me as creating Soundscape VR. To be innovators of the next evolution of music, seeing all the love music fans have for us, inspires everything we do.  Every time someone takes off the headset and tells us that what just happened was most amazing experience of their entire life; it makes everything worthwhile,” says Soundscape VR CEO and founder Eric Ryan Alexander

PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates that virtual reality will generate $4.9 billion in revenue in 2018, up from $421 million in 2016, and it’s set to expand the most of any entertainment industry, with 68 million headsets in use by 2021.

Soundscape VR is preparing for that growth by expanding past singular consumer use and has added capability for musicians and production companies to use Soundscape VR as a medium to perform in the real and virtual world simultaneously through synchronized performances.  On December 20th, Groove Science Studios will be launching a free expansion to Soundscape VR adding private & public social VR worlds, a new multiplayer rhythm game, a redesigned interface, as well as a suite of other enhancements.

Step Into Soundscape: Burning Man’s Insane VR Art Installation

Soundscape VR’s art installation, an interactive virtual reality (VR) music visualizer, was the first of its kind at Burning Man. Powered by musicians playing live, the experience was synchronized across two worlds—the real and the virtual. “Synesthesia is a good way to describe it,” said Founder and Creative Director, Eric Ryan Alexander, “where one sensory experience provokes another.”

Really though, Soundscape VR might just be the coolest thing you’ve never tried. Here’s a glimpse of what it’s like.

Donning an Oculus Rift headset and controllers, you’re transported to your chosen virtual sphere, Black Sun (an uber space odyssey) or Crystalline Summit (an electric mountainous wonderland). It’s a feast for the senses. The music is the heartbeat: it drives the visual body and landscape. The sky pulsates. Neon shapes undulate and grow under all-encompassing beats. Riffs draw to the vivid, pull to the vibrant. It’s total convergence of sight and sound.

In this ever-evolving universe, you’re both spectator and creator. It is a world of your own making. You can paint, sketch, blast beams of color and light. You can explore and uncover treasures. Even defy gravity. That’s right, in Soundscape VR, you can fly.

Meanwhile, as you’re soaring above the panorama, everything you do and devise is projected on an 120-inch screen. People on the outside—those eager to play or friends watching you—are reacting to your manifestations. Cheers erupt as you blast fireworks, doodle, write names in the sky.

At Burning Man, the pure positive energy and love the Soundscape VR team received was inspiring. Soundscape VR players—from 10-year-old gamers to VR virgins, from new media professors to musicians—called the game magical, powerful, mind-blowing and quite possibly the most incredible thing they’ve ever done.

It became clear to the team that Soundscape VR changes perceptions. “I began thinking about Soundscape as paradigm-shifting,” said Visual Engineer, Ryan Johnson. “It’s more than just a game. It’s a comfortable, immersive space for people to play.” There is no winning or losing, it’s about being free—free enough to be, create or explore.

Five years in the making (since the earliest days of VR), Soundscape VR was born out of a passion for live music, gaming and artistic expression. Alexander saw beyond the traditional lighting and effects used at live shows where the fan is merely a consumer, and he developed a space where people can become active participants in the music experience, or rather, creators themselves.

Soundscape VR is currently collaborating with musicians to produce virtual concerts and listening parties. “Whatever the artists can dream up, we can create in virtual reality,” Alexander said. Through forging a new music experience, Soundscape VR is enhancing the relationship between artists and their audience.

“VR affects people in such a profound way. Transporting another music lover to a secret universe where they can meld with their favorite artists is pure magic,” Alexander said. “I want to continue take the wildest things possible—dreams that cannot exist in reality due to laws of physics or astronomical expense and transmute them and make them very real.”

Soundscape VR is available to download on Steam and Oculus Home.

Check out Soundscape VR’s new art installation October 26-29, 2018 at the Hulaween Music Festival in Live Oak, Florida. In late 2018, Soundscape VR is releasing a multiplayer update that provides a social environment as in a real-life concert.
